Some of you will know that in the late 1950s, Lucy started a Desilu Workshop Theater at her studio, Desilu, in order to give back something to those just starting their careers, by giving them experience behind and in front of the camera. The young’uns included future personality Robert Osborne (author, movie expert and host at Turner Classic Movies), Majel Barrett (who would go on to marry Star Trek Creator Gene Roddenberry and play Nurse Chapel in the original series, and voice the Enterprise computer in all the movies and series that followed, up until her death), Ken Berry, Lucy protege Carole Cook, and many others.
Most were featured in the Westinghouse Desilu Playhouse Christmas special (called “The Desilu Review,” framed by typical Lucy behind-the-scenes shenanigans) which aired on December 25, 1959. My friend (and artist extraordinaire) Dave Woodman tipped me off to this fabulous blog at the L.A. Times by Larry Harnish, which covers historic Hollywood. This link features the Desilu Workshop (including the pic, above), plus more rare pictures you’ve probably never seen.
